Ming Museum
Welcome from the Ju Ming Museum in New Taipei City.
Ju Ming is one of the most celebrated sculptors in
Taiwan.
Does that give you an idea of what kind of sculptures
he makes?
M: Taichi?
This is Ju Ming��s most famous series: Taichi. These
sculptures are made of copper.
Wow. It��s really something. Look at that shape. Do
you know what gave him the idea to do that?
Supposedly his sculpting teacher said to him one day,
��Practice Taichi for your spiritual and physical health.��
And I guess he really took it to heart because he
reached a kind of spiritual and cultural enlightenment.
And so do I.
Michella look, this looks like his latest work, but
it isn��t copper, is it?
No, it��s not. Actually Ju Ming uses a variety of media,
the Taichi guys are copper, and this guy is stainless
steel.
Look at this little fella. He looks quite puffy. I
guess you need something puffy to do it.
Exactly. This guy is made of sponges and strings.
You see where it��s tied for that puffy feel? And you
know what the Taichi sculptures are made of?
Well based on sculpture, it wouldn��t be wood, so I
would say plaster maybe?
Close enough. Same color, different material: styrofoam.
Ah styrofoam, makes sense.
You know what Cedric? I think I really enjoyed the
Ju Ming museum. It reminds me of the Hakone Open Air
Museum in Japan. There is an indoor area and there
is an outside area where you can walk around and enjoy
the art in a wide, open space outside. And it��s really
nice that Ju Ming himself designed the entire complex.
The whole place, you could say almost the whole park,
the museum, is 11 hectares wide, so actually you can
come with your whole family, spend the whole day and
it would be a day full of culture, education and fun.
