�Kbirdwatching, or I should say, black faced spoonbill
watching.

Really? I counted 72.

What is the Chinese name of the black faced spoonbills?
In Chinese, they're called heimian pilu, or heipi
for short.

Michella, can we come to Tainan all year long to watch
the spoonbills?
You probably want to come in the winter.
Oh, migratory birds.
Right. Because normally, they live on the islands
off of North and South Korea, but it gets too cold
over there in the winter, so they fly south and some
will continue on to places like Vietnam, but most
will stay in this Tainan area.
I understand them.
The food here is really good. Actually, after the
milkfish season ends, the farms are mostly untouched
and the spoonbills can feed off of whatever fish that��s
left.
A bit like a Tainan style wedding banquet.

need an invitation.

can eat.
The place we visited earlier was originally zoned
for industrial development. But after it was found
that the black faced spoonbills like to come here
in the winter, the government actually left it as
is and now, it��s more or less a bird sanctuary.
Yeah, because the spoonbills are an endangered species.
Though things are getting better now because back
in 1988, there were less than 300 specimens alive
in the world. And now we are up to 3,000 and on a
good day in Tainan, you can see 300 to 400.
Wow, that's quite an improvement. But still they need
to be protected. I��m happy that we got to see so many
today.
Yeah, and the thing is, Tainan is not only a good
place to see spoonbills, because, in terms ornithology,
I am a complete layman, but I could spot half a dozen
species. I think it��s a perfect place for a bird watcher
to come and take pictures and just look at nature.
