Escape to Taichung
Strolling in the Art Garden,
enjoying the greenery
and public art - this
a real treat, especially
if you consider that just
a couple of streets out
awaits the hustle and
bustle of city life.
Chen Dao-jie, Art
Garden Director:
Let me tell you, lots
of people here, the
ones you see taking
nice relaxing walks
on the street, have
escaped here from
Taipei. The natural
environment here really
allow people to unwind,
and it feels like
an oasis in the middle
of a city.
So
what do people eat
here? Certainly not
fast food. How does
duck confit sound
to you?
Syu
You-de, Chef:
We use 75 day old
ducks from Yilan.
Along with salt and
pepper, you cure it
for a day, and then
you saute it on low
heat with lots of
vegetables. After
that, you poach it
in fat for eight hours.
The skin comes out
crispy and the meat
very tender.
Mm,
this might sound like
comfort food for some
people.
There
are lots of shops
along the Art Garden,
and heres another
one. Its an organic
foods restaurant,
but they sell produce
as well.
Amy
Lu, Restaurant Owner:
Most people think
sweet potatoes are
healthy healthy foods,
but because they grow
in the ground and
if theyre given chemical
fertilizer, youll
end up taking in a
lot of those chemicals.
Producing
a violin is no easy
task, and it takes
about two hundred
years of playing to
find out how great
a violin can really
sound. But there are
more than violinists
coming through this
place. Visitors can
make a decoupage clock
out of a violin back.
Makes
for a decent souvenir,
no?
Relaxing,
cultured, yet fun
and sophisticated,
the Taichung Art Garden
is an escape from
city life, in the
city.
